چکیده

multiple sclerosis (ms) is a demyelinating disorder of central nervous system. it involves 8th cranial nerve and its central nuclei and is an uncommon cause of the sensorineural hearing loss. for determining the prevalence of hearing loss (hl) especially retrocochlear type in ms, a cross-sectional study was designed using pure-tone audiometry (pta), otoacustic emissions (oaes), auditory brainstem responses (abrs) compared with the control group. data were analyzed by qui2 & fischer exact test in spss 17 software. among 60 patients (44 women & 16 men) and 38 controls (27 women & 11 men) with a mean age of 29.9±9.8 and 31.4± 8.3 years, 12.5% of case ears and 3.9% of the control ears had abnormal pta (p= 0.043). frequency of abnormal high frequency-pta and two modalities of oaes were not significantly different between case and control ears. the means of overall correlation were 75.9±23.8 in cases and 70.0±27.2 in controls (p= 0.111). 20% of case ears, and 9.2% of the control ears had abnormal abrs (p= 0.044). the absolute latencies of waves i, ii & v had not significant difference, but 10% and 11.7% of case ears and 1.3% & none of the control ears had increased inter peak latencies of i-iii, and iii-v respectively (p

Newborn hearing screening with combined otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses.

Accurate assessment of neonatal hearing screening performance is impossible without knowledge of the true status of hearing, a prohibitive requirement that necessitates a complete diagnostic evaluation on all babies screened. The purpose of this study was to circumvent this limitation by integrating two types of screening measures obtained near simultaneously on every baby. Peripheral auditory ...

Comparison of cochlear delay estimates using otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses.

Different attempts have been made to directly measure frequency specific basilar membrane (BM) delays in animals, e.g., laser velocimetry of BM vibrations and auditory nerve fiber recordings. The present study uses otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) to estimate BM delay non-invasively in normal-hearing humans. Tone bursts at nine frequencies from 0.5 to 8 kHz s...

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem responses sensitivity assessment in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats.

UNLABELLED Cisplatin (cis-diamminedicloroplatinum) is an antineoplastic drug used in the treatment of a variety of cancers, especially head-and-neck cancer. Its ototoxicity, however, has been noted as a common side-effect which limits its use and causes significant morbidity. AIM to assess distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) and brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) sensiti...

AUDITORY BRAINSTEM RESPONSES (ABR) IN HYPERBILIRUBINEMIC NEWBORNS

To evaluate the changes of ABR values in hyperbilirubinemic newborns, 85 cases with severe jaundice (total bilirubin levels over 16 mg/dL and direct bilirubin less than 2 mg/dL) were selected from those admitted to Children's Medical Center by simple sampling method. These infants had no other problem except jaundice. ABR was taken before treatment in all cases and in some (10 cases) after...

Otoacoustic emissions in sudden unilateral hearing loss associated with multiple sclerosis.

Sudden unilateral hearing loss may result from etiologies affecting cochlea, eighth nerve, or more central auditory tracts. Two case studies are presented in which the measurement of otoacoustic emissions helped rule out outer hair cell cochlear pathology. In both cases, the final diagnosis was sudden unilateral hearing loss associated with multiple sclerosis (MS). For one case, the sudden hear...
